Day's 7 and 8 the final few days.
My trip was drawing to a close with just one more day of koi buying , the first farm to visit was Uedera Koi Farm , I have being coming to this farm for many years and have always found this a great place to vist , the quality of his koi is very high but what helps me the most i the individual selection of High Quality Tosai. His bloodlines are very famous and uses Dainichi, Momotaro, Sakai bloodline together with his own Oyagoi and produces , Gosanke , Ochiba , Shiro Utsuri and Kujaku.
I didnt have time to photograph these koi individually as today was a very packed day with alot of travelling , before heading back to my Hotel in Okayama for the last time.
All these Koi are Tosai , Spawned in June last year , all unsexed when purchased ,there are traits to look for when purchasing Tosai to determine the sex of the Koi , never 100% guaranteed but i have purchased these koi with this in mind. If the breeder had chosen these koi to grow Jumbo and were now female these would be approximately 35cm and would be over £1000.
All approximately 25cm with superb patterns and quality , excellent tsubo sumi , all priced at £275.
After a quick coffee and a chat about next years new production of Shiro Utsuri , it was off to my second farm of the day. This trip was developing into one of my favourites due to all the breeders really helping me bring back some stunning Koi to the UK , I have said it is easy to buy Koi but to buy great Koi requires alot of patience and understanding with the breeders, it takes time but the results can be superb. The Koi below are from one breeders recommendations to me !
These are just a selection of koi available ,they are all Tosai and unsexed, all chosen from his best tosai ponds , if the breeder had space these would be going into his mudponds , unfortunately as space is not available he has to grow these at the farm in concrete ponds, so expected size at Nisai would be about 40cm , his Jumbo Tosai from the mud ponds will be approximately 55cm at harvest. Same parents same quality just grown a different way. I am asked many times if smaller Tosai can grow Jumbo and the answer is always yes. Ask the breeder if a 25cm tosai can grow to 80cm and he will either say " of course " or "why only 80cm ! " . The only thing that holds back Koi growth is how they are kept.
Not much of a video and picture day today as its been very hectic , The Koi below have now been purchased from Day 2 at the INC home of the Matsunosuke bloodline. Again outstanding quality and only a selection. To get these koi has taken a bit of time but when you see them you will see why , superb quality and patterns .If you would like any further information on these koi please message me.
It has been a fantastic trip and i hope you have enjoyed the blog , it takes alot of time but i eventually get it done, as mentioned i will give alot more information on what is happening at Oishi Koi Farm and give more information on Miracle Animal plus a few more exciting things i have planned for my next trip which is due late October early November. I hope to see you soon and you like the Koi i have purchased.

Day 5 FFC and Oishi Koi Farm...
Everything went well on my final day in Niigata enabling me to arrive at Okayama station at 4pm , giving me enough time to visit the new factory of Functional Foods Creation (FFC). I first came across this company almost nine years ago after reading about a food suppliment to aid the development of Koi , never one to miss out on something new i arranged my first import of one of this companies products Miracle Animal , many of you will have used it and hopefuly seen for yourselves the benefits of this additive. I will give more iformation about this product later as it is quite envolved and very interesting.
The new factory will enable them to increase their production to keep up with international trade. The reason for this company developing Miracle Animal for the Koi market is due to the President Mr Ikeda having an obsession with Koi i dont think it will be long before a Koi Pond appears somewhere at the factory in the near future.
From the Factory is was back to Okayama for dinner at a traditional and famous Japanese BBQ restaurant. I like these restaurants in Japan just like the noodle bars, quick fresh and healthy food and very good price , i dont think we could have this type of restaurant in England health and safety would take care of that. I shame because this place was full and queuing outside and the cows intestine may put people off !
The next morning it was up early for the 90 minute Drive to Oishi Koi Farm , I was looking forward to discussions with Massaki Oishi about some changes at the Farm regarding their Koi production. More on this later as its time for some Koi !
First pond was for some high quality Shiro Utsuri and Gin Rin Shiro , Oishi produces superb quality Shiro's and has done so for decades. These koi chosen for pattern and skin quality.
These Koi are priced at £125 each , great offer from Masaaki Oishi.
When you have such a good relationship with breeders quite often you can be left alone to make your choices , this is exactly what happened here ,lunchtime Koi selection !
The following koi below are all Jumbo Tosai from 40cm to 46cm.
40cm 41cm 45cm
40cm 43cm 40cm
39cm 40cm 45cm 44cm
Three videos missing , sometimes in Japan you can get lucky being at the right place at the right time , but the koi on these trips is not luck it is planning and building confidence with breeders that you are not just turning up on the day , the breeders i visit know what I need and the price i want to pay. All these koi are very high quality superb for showing. The sumi placement is very good , great beni patterns and already over 40cm at 11 months.
A great day at Oishi and as mentioned earlier more to follow , tomorrow i will be visiting two more of my regular breeders for some high level smaller tosai.
Day 5
Nogami Tategoi House
This is my last day in Niigata before travelling to the South and it was a very full last few hours , after checking out of the Hotel first stop was Nogami Koi farm. I always enjoy going to this Farm , not the biggest in Niigata but Hisato Nogami grows some unbelievable Koi , huge bodies and superb quality. The following koi were purchased before we took a short drive to his Tategoi House.
Due to a very sunny day , video quality was poor so i only have these pictures. They all have great skin and bodies and are all female Jumbo Tosai. I will put prices on the website tomorrow. I will continue this day later , very late and up early in search of Sanke ......
From Nogami is was a quick stop at Chogoro for some superb Platinum Ogons , all female and 40cm to 45cm
Before i made my way to Nogaoka station there was one more visit to Marudo for more female Chagoi and Yamabuki these koi are all 40cm plus and have superb scalation and body shape to grow very big.
I will be posting all koi with prices on my website , please look for New Koi in Japan on the main tool bar "Our Koi". it has been a very busy and excellent time in Niigata now it was time to head South and see what I can find there.
Nagaoka Station was very quiet, when i get to Tokyo it would be a different story , with two hours on this train it gave me time to catch up with some work and gettig those pictures and videos on the website and Facebook pages.
It was good to be at the Ojiya Park Hotel as this would be my home for the next three days. After breakfast it was my first day Koi Hunting and first stop was to visit Yoshiyuki Hirasawa where some high quality females Nisai where waiting for me to choose.
I get many people asking me about the food in Japan so I will be posting a few pictures of the food available when on these superb adventures. No guesses for what breakfast was , Japanese Western Style Breakfast , not sure where the cold Broccoli comes from !
One of the best places to buy Chagoi and Yamabuki is from Marusei Koi Farm ( Hirasawa) , they all grow Jumbo and I have seen many over 1 meter , If your water is heated then you can enjoy very fast growth with these Koi.
All Female and 40cm plus , superb scalation and excellent quality.
All Female and 40cm plus , superb scalation and excellent quality.
Hirasawa produces some of the best Hi Utsuri and last year i bought many and they are doing very well , so a few more Female Nisai Hi Utsuri will be on they way back to the UK
Also purchased were these Female Nisai Shusui and Asagi , i will post prices for all of these koi on the new drop down box titled , " New Koi in Japan " . After an excellent morning it was a quick visit to the Severn 11 for lunch then off to Marudo for more high quality Sanke.
The weather was supurb which meant a very hot Koi House !!

A superb day and more to come from Marudo Tomorrow on the way back to the hotel we stopped off for some spicy noodles before taking over the reception of the hotel to watch the Russian Grand Prix. I said the hotel would be my home for a few days !!
Great Day and Great Evening , tomorrow its back to the mundane job of Koi Hunting !!
Day 3 Maruyama and heading to Niigata....
After checking out of the hotel it would only be a thirty minute drive to Maruyama Koi farm , it was another beautiful sunny day and i was looking forward to purchasing some high quality female jumbo tosai.
All the above koi are Female Jumbo Tosai from 40cm to 45cm .
It was a very good morning at Maruyama Koi Farm and didnt take long to have many Koi in a bowl and some great purchases made.
Leaving the sunshine at Futoshi Maruyama's garden and arriving at a rainy Niigata. No pot of gold here but i knew the next few days would result in some superb Koi.
Day 2 ..... search for Sanke.
A couple of years ago I was at the Farm when Toshi was bringing some large Sanke from another Koi House. I am very lucky to get the chance to see the kind of Koi many of us can only dream of this is why i am always searching for High Quality Koi in all price ranges so we can all have the chance to grow koi to a superb level. I never get bored of seeing these videos !
The first two ponds to be netted , the Koi in here were mainly Sanke with a few very nice Kohaku.
Bowl 1 Bowl 2
These Koi have excellent skin and bodies to grow big , the beni quality and shiroji is superb . All the Sankes have very thick shiny sumi. Sizes are 25cm approximately and a great price from Toshi !
The afternoon was at a different Koi house where some High Quality Tosai were purchased , the pictures did not come out too well so I have attached only a couple of videos , varieties purchased , were Sanke , Kohaku , Shiro Utsuri and Tancho.
Two very high quality Female Jumbo Tosai.
Three superb Tancho , excellent bodies and skin.
Only two pictures of the Tancho's third picture not good.
It was an excellent two days at this farm and there will be more news later on some Female Kohaku Jumbo Tosai.
Day 1 , Isawa Nishikigoi Centre
You can follow my Japan Trip also on FaceBook where it is easier to upload pictures and videos during the day , a more detailed blog is done from the Hotel when I get the time. After arriving the night before it was an earlier start to take the Bus from Haneda Airport is Isawa to meet with Toshio Sakai and visit the Isawa Nishikigoi Centre , famous for the Matsunosuke Bloodline and the hunt for some high quality Sanke.
The bus stop was at a Hot Spring foot spa , these are located all around Isawa as the area is very famous for its Hot Springs. After being collected it was a short drive to meet with Toshio Sakai and Toshi. I would be bowling koi tomorrow so the after noon was spent going to various Koi Houses.
Isawa Nishikigoi Centre is a very large farm with Koi houses in several locations , tomorrow i would be starting at the main Koi house. Here is where his Tategoi and Tateshita Tosai are kept. Fantastic weather as always in Isawa and only 5 minutes from the Hotel , this is always a great place to Visit before travelling to Niigata.
